City Guide for Mercedes, TX

In the olden days, the town of Mercedes, Texas, was home to the Toluca Ranch (still standing), which was a huge target for the legendary bandidos during the time of Pancho Villa. To keep its people and belongings safe, the ranch was built with some of the coolest and most complicated secret passageways, hidden rooms, and special heavy wooden shutters to keep people from climbing in the windows.

Mercedes' storied past extends far beyond its days of bandidos. It was also the location of the headquarters of General Zachary Taylor, which had convenient access via stagecoach and riverboat to Mercedes' Rabb Ranch. There's lots still going on in Mercedes, and the town is just as vibrant as it was back then (but also much calmer and safer). Incorporated in 1909, today about 15,570 people call Mercedes home. Geographically, Mercedes is nearly as far south as you can go in the giant state, meaning it's also a suburb or commuter town for the nearby big city, McAllen. Want to live somewhere that affords easy access to Mexico, rivers for water sports or travel, and also large interstates to get around the rest of Texas? Mercedes may be just your place. Grab your tank tops (the weather is hot) and pack your bag, because there are plenty of rental homes for you to choose from! See more

What to keep in mind when looking for apartments with balconies in Mercedes, TX

Balconies are a coveted amenity for many renters looking for high-rise views and opportunities for fresh air. However, you should keep in mind that balconies often come with restrictions.

Before signing a lease, ask about how many people can be on the balcony at once. Also, ask about whether you’re allowed to store a bike or other items.

You’ll also want to know about any maintenance schedules. Using your balcony as storage could result in fines and intervention from your property management.

Keep in mind that not all balconies are created equally. You may discover the views of the parking area are less than optimal or reduce your overall privacy.

Balconies can also get messy with debris, foliage, dirt, and pollen depending on your location. Renters are typically responsible for any clean-up and basic balcony upkeep.

Regardless of the issues to keep in mind, balconies are usually a big win for Mercedes renters. Ask about apartments on higher floors for the best views.
