In a great marketing move long before focus groups, two communities of Buckhead and Mossville joined together under the new name of Sweet Home in 1874. Covered bridges, country music, and outdoor adventure pretty much describe this Oregon city nicknamed the Gateway to the Santiam Playground. Waterways such as the Santiam River, Calapooia River, Foster Lake, Green Peter Lake, and the prehistoric Petrified Forest make Sweet Home rich in natural resources like crystals and precious metals. Speaking of water, Sweet Home experiences precipitation for about half the year (or if you're optimistic, over 150 sunny days annually).
Moving to Sweet Home
Sweet Home, which spans about six square miles, isn't really divided into formal neighborhoods -- the town's name eliminates the need to dress up every cul de sac and subdivision with unique identifiers. But if you want a riverfront home or spectacular mountain views from your back porch, Sweet Home is your stop--just keep in mind that many residences use well water. Skiers, hikers, and country music fans with a serious pair of rain boots can search for their perfect home for rent or apt for rent in Sweet Home by focusing on either the western or eastern sides of the city.
Sweet Home Neighborhoods
West Sweet Home: Santiam River and Santiam Highway 16 both cross this mostly owner-occupied neighborhood. Riverfront homes and easy access to the highway make it a desirable place to live, but beware: studio apartments for rent are less common in this part of the city. As a whole, Sweet Home offers a low cost of living, and a whole lot of horses; you can easily find properties with space for your equine friends (and even a laundry service for them on the West side).
East Sweet Home: Willamette Log Pond invokes the logging industry roots of Sweet Home, and adds to the peaceful scenery of its East side. Upper Calapooia Drive is a favorite spot for waterfront living with lots of mature trees, local wildlife, and backyards with opportunities for fishing and swimming mere steps from your back door. This half of the city reflects a better ratio of renters to owners, so prospective residents will have an easier time finding rental houses.
