With a total land area of 6.8 square miles and 5,661 residents, Rusk has grown and flourished over the past century and a half, transforming itself into a thriving and beautiful city that honors and preserves its past.
Moving to Rusk
For those of you lucky enough to be moving to Rusk, any time of year is the perfect time of year to make your move! North of Houston by 150 miles, this little city in the Piney Woods of east Texas has very little of the population movement that is often associated with college towns and larger cities. It is best to give yourself three to four weeks of property searching time, just so you don't feel pressured into apartment complexes that are not exactly what you are looking for. Preparation is always the key in these circumstances! You will need to have the basics, such as identification, references, and money saved for fees and deposits. Neighborhoods in Rusk
The city of Rusk has two neighborhoods. The smallest and most populated is at the city's center or downtown area, and the other surrounds that and expands out into the countryside. Knowing a little about each one will help you decide where to begin your search for a rental property that reflects your lifestyle and personality.
City Center: Are you looking for an apartment to rent in Rusk, but you want to be close to the center of the city? If so, this is the perfect suburban neighborhood for you! With Jim Hogg State Park and City Lake as the centerpieces of the area, there won't be a lack of places to get out and stretch your legs or those of your four-legged companions. Highway 69 and Highway 84 crisscross through the center of the city, making this neighborhood perfect for commuters working in Jacksonville and Palestine.
Shady Grove/Atoy: This neighborhood surrounds the city center and expands out into the surrounding countryside. Perfect for anyone who enjoys a bit of room between themselves and their nearest neighbors, using an apartment locator to help find a home or a studio for rent will be your best bet. The area is heavily forested and features mostly medium to large homes and apartments (think two to five bedrooms). One of the most striking things about this neighborhood is the unobstructed view you have of the night sky! The Rusk Life
You will never be bored -- unless by choice -- in the city of Rusk. With 32 historical markers in and around the city, you can soak up the local history and see the sights all at once. Locals love the Texas State Railroad's Steam Engine Train that takes passengers on a Polar Express trip during the Christmas season, as well as tours to a pumpkin patch during the Halloween and Thanksgiving seasons.
